1939 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-005
Error
Description
Appearing on the Reverse of 1940 hub type with its distinctive straight Monticello steps, DDR-005 of the 1939 Jefferson Nickel shows extra thickness on PLURIBUS UNUM and the last O of MONTICELLO, with light separation visible on the lower portions of UM in UNUM. The Reverse of 1940 designation (RDV-002) distinguishes this variety from coins struck with the earlier Reverse of 1938 hub, which has slightly different step geometry on Monticello's entrance. Attributed by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-618 and DMR-014, three progressive stages are documented: Stage A in early die state remains unconfirmed, Stage B at mid-die state awaits confirmation, and Stage C shows both reverse and obverse in late die state. The 1939 Jefferson Nickel exists with two distinct reverse hub types, making the straight-step reverse a major variety in the second year of Felix Schlag's design. The extra thickness on PLURIBUS UNUM and the light separation on UM provide the primary diagnostic, while the O of MONTICELLO offers additional confirmation. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel at Philadelphia, this early Jefferson Nickel documents reverse hub doubling on the scarcer Reverse of 1940 type.
