1939 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-009

Description

Bearing three distinct hub impressions on Lincoln's eyelid, WDDO-009 of the 1939 Lincoln Wheat Cent is a Wexler Team attribution showing a tripled eyelid south and southeast from the primary lid line. Tripling is rarer than standard doubling and requires at least three separate hub-to-die contacts with slight misalignment between each impression. Obverse die markers include a die gouge running south from the rim centered above the U in TRUST and a die scratch extending east-southeast from the bust just below the V of the designer's initials. A curly die gouge from the rim east of the top of the last T in TRUST is identified as a master hub product, meaning it appears on multiple dies from the same master hub and should not be used alone for attribution. On the reverse, a die scratch runs north-northwest to south-southeast between the U and N of UNITED. The tripled eyelid provides the primary diagnostic for this variety, distinguishing it from the numerous other 1939 DDO listings. Collectors should use the master-hub gouge cautiously, confirming attribution through the eyelid tripling and the bust-area die scratch.
