1939 Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002

Description

1939 WDDR-002 is a doubled die reverse on the 1939 Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Light extra thickness appears on the tips of the wheat ears, EPU (E PLURIBUS UNUM), and the dots. The obverse is a doubled die as well, listed as WDDO-014. Its Stage A has a large crack winding from the lower shoulder eastward to the vest, light cracks in the hair under WE, a clash at the neck, a heavy vertical gouge beneath LIBERTY's L, and three small gouges over the 939 of the date. On Stage B the cracks and neck clash are largely unchanged, though the bust crack reaches farther west, and the gouges are weaker. On Stage C the cracks are unchanged, the neck clash is very faint, and the gouges over the date and under the L are much weaker. On the Stage A reverse there are strong NNW/SSE scratches across the left side of the design, including through UNITED and the CE of CENT; small gouges (dots) above the second T of STATES and right of its second S; and a clash at the top right of CENT's N. On Stage B the gouges around STATES are lightly visible and the N clash remains, but every scratch has been abraded away and replaced by new ones: a faint clash through CENT's C, a scratch south from the E of EPU, crisscrossing scratches through UNUM, light scratches curving NE from the T of CENT to the wheat ear, and a curving scratch through the lower STATE of STATES. On Stage C only the N clash is still visible, along with a gouge right of the E in STATES. Daniel Griffin submitted Stages A and C, and Frank Baumann Stage B. CONECA lists it as 10-R-VI; the Coppercoins number is 1939P-1DR-007.
