1939 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-022

Description

Sharing the distinctive extra eyelid diagnostic seen on other 1939 Lincoln Wheat Cent doubled dies, WDDO-022 shows the extra eyelid southeast of the primary eyelid — a different directional spread than the southward displacement on WDDO-016. This directional distinction confirms these are separate die products despite sharing the same general doubling characteristic. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1939 1¢ WDDO-022, this variety carries its own unique die markers for positive identification. On the obverse, a die gouge is present in the vest directly south of the 1 in the date, and a small die gouge dot appears to the lower left of U in TRUST. Reverse die markers include several vertical die scratches through the lower C in CENT and additional vertical scratches through the lower E in ONE extending through the upper T in CENT. No other cross-references are currently known. The 1939 Lincoln Wheat Cent is one of the more productive dates for doubled die obverse research, with twenty-two or more documented varieties demonstrating the range of hub misalignment events that occurred during die production for this prewar date.
