Description

Sharing the WDDR-003 designation with its Reverse of 1938 counterpart, this 1939 Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverse appears on the Reverse of 1940 type — the revised Monticello design that replaced the original 1938 reverse partway through 1939 and continued through subsequent decades. The same variety number applies to both reverse types because the Class II distorted hub doubling on E PLURIBUS UNUM was identified on specimens bearing each design, while parent listings distinguish the reverse type. Lou Coles discovered this variety, which shows very close doubling best visible on UNUM. The obverse markers — a die dot between D of GOD and W of WE, plus a die scratch through U of TRUST — and reverse markers — a die scratch above B of PLURIBUS near the rim and another from M to the first O of MONTICELLO — match those on the Reverse of 1938 listing. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1939 WDDR-003, the dual-listing structure reflects how the 1939 Jefferson's unique position as a transitional year with two concurrent reverse designs requires separate documentation for collector attribution.
