Description
Listed by the Wexler Team and cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #2, WRPM-006 on the 1939-D Mercury Dime shows a D mintmark punched over a D in a westward direction (D/D West). Submitted by John S. Gillilan, this variety carries distinctive obverse die markers including a horizontal die gouge running through the lower I in LIBERTY and a die gouge extending east-northeast from the lower B in LIBERTY. Additional obverse diagnostics include WSW/ENE die scratches running through the date. On the reverse, light WSW/ENE die scratches can be found on the blade of the axe, with additional light N/S die scratches running throughout most of the reverse surface. The 1939-D Mercury Dime was struck at the Denver Mint in 90% silver and 10% copper, weighing 2.50 grams with a diameter of 17.9 mm. Adolph A. Weinman's iconic Winged Liberty Head design, commonly called the Mercury Dime, ran from 1916 to 1945 and remains one of the most artistically acclaimed coin designs in American numismatics. The D/D West repunched mintmark indicates the D punch was first placed slightly to the east of its final position, then corrected with a second impression shifted westward, leaving traces of the original placement visible to the east of the final mintmark. This variety is best examined under 10x magnification focused on the reverse mintmark area below the olive branch.
