1938 Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004

Description

1938 WDDR-004 is a doubled die reverse on the 1938 Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Strong Class VI extra thickness covers both wheat stems, EPU (E PLURIBUS UNUM), the dots, and the top of ONE's E, and both wheat ears show a Class II spread toward the center. Obverse Stage A: a short scratch rising north from inside the top of LIBERTY's Y; two SSW-to-NNE scratches left of the back of the neck; and a short WNW-to-ESE scratch under the first T of TRUST on its left side. On Stage B these scratches are much weaker. On the Stage A reverse a scratch curves from the first U of UNUM, at its upper right, to the top right of ONE's E; several north-south scratches lie between the N and E of ONE; several SW-to-NE scratches sit inside that E; and many other scratches appear across the reverse. By Stage B most of the Stage A scratches are very weak or abraded away. John A. Wexler submitted Stage A and Whaden Curtis Stage B. Wexler lists no cross-references. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
