1938 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003
Error
Description
The 1938 Lincoln Wheat Cent WDDR-003 shows light extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM, the flanking dots, and very lightly on the wheat ears — a modest but confirmable spread across multiple reverse elements. Die markers are strong. The obverse carries a strong die scratch below the OD of GOD and a long die scratch that runs from the center of Lincoln's vest to the 3 in the date, then turns north into the field — a traceable two-leg path covering a wide zone of the obverse. The reverse shows a heavy die scratch from the tip of the left wheat ear through the E, left dot, and PL of PLURIBUS, crossing several legend letters in a single stroke. Wexler variety attribution is 1938 1¢ WDDR-003, with no active CONECA or Cherrypickers cross-reference. The 1938 Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck at Philadelphia without a mintmark in the 95% copper alloy that defined wheat cents through 1942. The vest-to-date die scratch on the obverse is a rapid screening tool, covering a large span of the design in one mark.
