1937 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-002

Description

Strong extra thickness pervades the outer rim lettering on this 1937 Washington Silver Quarter, with concentrated doubling on the PL of PLURIBUS, the UN of UNUM, the outer wing feathers of the heraldic eagle, and the lower wreath leaves and stems. Die markers UVC-0066 and DMR-009 identify the working die across three documented stages. Stage A and Stage B both carry unconfirmed die state assessments, indicating that specimens definitively attributable to early and mid-die states have not yet been fully documented. Stage C, however, is confirmed with both reverse and obverse reaching late die state, meaning the die pair accumulated substantial wear including die flow, stress lines, and possible clash marks before being retired. The strong intensity classification on the rim lettering — where PL and UN show the heaviest extra thickness — points to a hub displacement vector oriented to maximize visibility on those specific letter groups positioned nearest the die's periphery. John Flanagan's original 1932 Washington Quarter design features the heraldic eagle reverse with outstretched wings beneath E PLURIBUS UNUM and surrounded by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination, all elements where the strong doubling registers. Struck in 90% silver at 6.25 grams, the 1937 Philadelphia quarter carried a mintage of 7,189,600 — moderate by Washington Quarter standards. The combination of strong doubling intensity and confirmed late die state suggests collectors may find this variety most readily on well-worn specimens where the die had maximum service time, though the strong spread should remain visible even on circulated examples.
