1937 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001

Description

Carrying the primary FS-101 designation, DDO-001 of the 1937 Washington Quarter is the most significant doubled die obverse for this date. Very strong spread appears on the date and IN GOD WE TRUST, with light spread on LIBERTY, creating a multi-element variety where the doubling intensity varies across the design. The very strong spread on the date and motto makes this variety detectable without extreme magnification, while the lighter LIBERTY spread rewards careful examination. Attributed by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-0060 and DMR-003, three progressive stages are documented: Stage A in early die state remains unconfirmed, Stage B shows both obverse and reverse at mid-die state, and Stage C in late die state awaits confirmation. The 1937 Washington Quarter was struck at Philadelphia in 90% silver and 10% copper during the early years of John Flanagan's design, which debuted in 1932. As the FS-101 variety, DDO-001 holds the premier Cherry Picker's Guide position for this date, making it the first doubled die collectors seek when examining 1937 quarters.
