Primary repunched mintmark documented for the 1937-D Mercury dime, RPM-001 displays a D/D South orientation — meaning the initial D mintmark punch was placed too high, and a second corrective punch was applied in the final southward (lower) position, leaving traces of the first, higher D visible beneath or above the accepted final position. Adolph A. Weinman's Mercury dime design, produced from 1916 through 1945, placed the D mintmark on the reverse to the right of the fasces (the bundle of rods symbolizing strength through unity), where individual mintmark punches were hand-applied to each working die by mint employees. Denver struck approximately 14.15 million Mercury dimes in 1937, a mid-Depression production run that generated a moderate number of working die pairs. Repunched mintmarks were an inherent byproduct of the hand-punching process: each working die received its mintmark as a separate operation after the hub impressed the main design, and if the initial placement was deemed incorrect, a second punch at the desired position could not fully obliterate the first impression. The southward direction indicates the correction moved the mintmark downward, and the remnant of the first punch appears as a ghostly secondary D image displaced northward (upward) from the final position.
