1936 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-016
Error
Description
Attributed under Wexler Variety ID 1936 1-cent WDDO-016, this Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent carries dual doubled die status — the obverse is WDDO-016 and the reverse is independently listed as WDDR-012. The obverse doubling manifests as an extra eyelid above the normal eyelid, a subtle but distinctive feature visible under moderate magnification. The reverse displays its own hub doubling with strong extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM, the separating dots, and both wheat ears. Having both sides independently cataloged as doubled dies indicates that the hub-to-die impression process produced misalignment on both the obverse and reverse working dies — whether from the same hubbing session or separate events. The combination makes this a dual-sided doubled die, a variety type that commands additional collector interest beyond single-side examples. Philadelphia's Lincoln Cent production during the mid-1930s Depression era involved heavy die usage under budget constraints, and worn or improperly maintained hubbing equipment may have contributed to the frequency of doubled die varieties from this period. Die Markers: Obverse: A short die scratch runs from north to south just to the right of the lips. A die scratch runs from north to south to the left of the center of the T in CENT. A die scratch runs SSE from the upper left of the 2nd T in STATES to the center of the T. A light die crack can be found on two of the outer kernels SE of the 2nd S in STATES.
