1936 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-007
Error
Description
A spread toward the center on the date identifies WDDO-007 on the 1936 Lincoln Wheat Cent, with diagnostic markers on both sides: two die scratches running north from the top of the T in LIBERTY on the obverse, and a die crack on the reverse running NNW from the upper left O in ONE through the L in PLURIBUS and out to the rim. Attributed by the Wexler Team with variety ID 1936 1¢ WDDO-007, the reverse die crack provides a particularly useful secondary attribution feature. The centerward spread on the date indicates the doubled image moved inward from the primary position, producing extra thickness or notching on the inner edges of the date digits. The 1936 Lincoln Wheat Cent was produced during the Great Depression era, and die varieties from this period document the Mint's production practices during a time of economic hardship. The combination of obverse doubling with distinctive reverse die cracking creates a variety with strong attribution markers on both sides.
