1936 Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001 / DDO-001

Description

The 1936 DDO-001, which Wexler numbers WDDO-001, is a doubled die obverse on the 1936 Lincoln wheat cent with very strong spread on the date, LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST. Both catalogs list it as Cherrypickers FS-101 (14), which Wexler writes FS-01-1936-101 (014). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties describes a very strong Class IV southwest spread on the date, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, the top of Lincoln's head and his ear. On obverse stage A a curved scratch follows the rim clockwise from 8:00 and ends above the U of TRUST, and a gouge on the upper back of the nose resembles those on some doubled eyelid varieties. Wexler notes the first hubbing came from a hub whose R in LIBERTY had a broken left leg. Obverse stage B adds a crack crossing the lower shoulder that carries a die chip at its midpoint, north of V.D.B. No reverse markers were noted in either stage. Sam Lukes submitted it. CONECA lists it as 1-O-IV, Breen as #2135, Crawford as CDDO-001, and Coppercoins as 1936P-1DO-001. VarietyVista, which does not name a reporter, also notes that the first hubbing's R in LIBERTY had a broken left leg. Under its marker codes UVC-1336 and DMR-003, stage A (early), stage B (middle) and stage D (late) are unconfirmed; stage C shows a crack across the lower bust with a chip on it, a middle die state, while the reverse is in a late-middle state.
