1936 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-013
Error
Description
A close centripetal spread on the date distinguishes this thirteenth doubled die obverse for the 1936 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent, attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1936 1c WDDO-013. Die markers on the obverse include a short die gouge inside the upper Y of LIBERTY, a die scratch running WSW from the rim above the second T in TRUST, and a short die gouge above the O in GOD. On the reverse, a short die scratch runs NE from the bottom of the C in CENT. The centripetal doubling pattern — a spread directed towards the center of the coin — indicates a specific hub rotation during the multi-impression hubbing process, where the hub shifted slightly inward between impressions. The 1936 date falls in the Depression Era, four years after the worst economic contraction, when Mint production was recovering from the drastically reduced outputs of 1931-1933. Philadelphia struck approximately 309 million cents in 1936, a substantial recovery that consumed many die pairs. Thirteen doubled die obverses for a single date reflects both the volume of production and the decades of intensive examination that Depression-era Lincoln Cents have received from variety specialists.
