1936 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-012
Error
Description
Struck during the Great Depression when mintages dropped sharply, the 1936 DDO-012 presents light spread on the date with rotation on LIBE of LIBERTY — a doubled die obverse where the secondary hub impression was both shifted and slightly rotated, producing a spread pattern that intensifies with distance from the pivot point. Cataloged by VarietyVista with Unique Variety Code UVC-1347 and Die Marriage Reference DMR-014, Stage B represents Mid Die State with the added diagnostic of a die crack running from the lower right wheat stalk to the rim on the reverse. The comment notes full R in LIBERTY, indicating the R is completely formed without weakness — an attribution detail distinguishing this die from others where R may show incomplete striking or die fill. The rotation on LIBE combined with linear spread on the date suggests the hub was both laterally displaced and angularly offset during the secondary impression. Brenner's Lincoln portrait was in its twenty-eighth year on bronze planchets at 19mm. Examine the date for light spread and LIBE for rotational doubling, check for the MDS die crack from the lower right wheat to the rim, and verify the full R.
