1936 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-009
Error
Description
Struck during the Great Depression when mintages dropped sharply, DDO-009 on the 1936 Philadelphia Lincoln Wheat Cent shows medium spread south on Lincoln's eyelid — a moderate-intensity version of the classic eyelid doubling where hub misalignment creates a secondary eyelid contour below the main line on Victor David Brenner's obverse portrait. Die markers UVC-1333 and DMR-011 confirm the working die across three states: Stage A in Early-to-Mid Die State (EMDS) with both obverse and reverse showing characteristics between fresh and moderately worn, Stage B in Mid Die State (unconfirmed), and Stage C in Late Die State (unconfirmed). The EMDS confirmation means the earliest known specimens already display some initial die wear. A useful die marker accompanies the doubling: the R in LIBERTY shows a full, complete foot without any fill or weakness — nicknamed "Full R" — that helps identify this specific working die. The 1936 Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in bronze composition (95% copper). Examine Lincoln's eyelid under 7x magnification for the medium southward spread, and verify the full R in LIBERTY as a confirming die marker.
