1936 Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003 / DDO-003

Description

Cross-referenced as FS-103, the 1936 Lincoln wheat cent DDO-003, which Wexler numbers WDDO-003, is a doubled die obverse with strong spread on IN GOD WE TRUST and LIBERTY, tracked by VarietyVista under its marker codes UVC-1338 and DMR-005. Wexler writes the Cherrypickers number FS-01-1936-103 (016), VarietyVista FS-103 (16). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties calls it a strong Class V clockwise spread pivoting at about 5:00, showing on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, the hair details and, slightly, the date. On the obverse a gouge (dot) lies inside the top of the Y in LIBERTY and a short scratch runs southwest from the back of the head, left of the ear. Wexler notes the first hubbing used a hub with a broken left leg on the R of LIBERTY. On the reverse a scratch runs SSW to NNE through the E of STATES and the second A of AMERICA. Sam Lukes submitted it. CONECA lists it as 3-O-V, Breen as #2135, Crawford as CDDO-003, and Coppercoins as 1936P-1DO-003. VarietyVista credits Natalie Halpern with the report and also notes that the R in LIBERTY on the first hubbing had a broken left leg. It records three stages, with both sides early in stage A, middle in stage B and late in stage C.
