1936 Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002 / DDO-002

Description

Cross-referenced as Fivaz-Stanton FS-102, the 1936 Lincoln wheat cent DDO-002, which Wexler numbers WDDO-002, is cataloged by VarietyVista under its marker codes UVC-1337 and DMR-004 and shows strong spread on the date, the tie, the coat folds and LIBERTY, with a very light rotated spread on the RUST of TRUST. Wexler writes the Cherrypickers number FS-01-1936-102 (015), VarietyVista FS-102 (15). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties calls it a very strong Class V counterclockwise spread pivoting at about 10:00, showing on the bowtie, LIBERTY, TRUST, the date, the lower bust and Lincoln's eyelid. Obverse stage A has a strong gouge that runs ESE off the rim and through the TRU of TRUST and a southwest scratch from the lower left of the I in LIBERTY; Wexler notes the hub used for the first hubbing had a broken left leg on the R of LIBERTY. In obverse stage B the TRUST gouge is much fainter and the scratch at the I has been abraded off. The stage A reverse has no noted markers; reverse stage B has scratches running northeast inside the C of CENT from its lower curve and a scratch running south from the bottom center of that C. Sam Lukes submitted stage A and Scott Rusch stage B. CONECA lists it as 2-O-V, Breen as #2135, Crawford as CDDO-002, and Coppercoins as 1936P-1DO-002. VarietyVista, with no reporter named, also records the broken left leg on the first hubbing's R in LIBERTY. It lists three stages, with obverse and reverse early in stage A, middle in stage B and late in stage C.
