1936 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001

Description

Produced during the final year of regular Buffalo nickel production before the series gave way to the Jefferson nickel in 1938, the 1936 DDO-001 displays very strong extra thickness on LIBERTY and the date. Cataloged as UVC-166 with die marker reference DMR-004, this variety is documented across three die stages: Stage A presents both obverse and reverse in early die state, Stage B advances to mid-die-state on both sides, and Stage C shows a strong die clash under the chin with the reverse in late die state. The progression from early to late die state reveals how the die clash developed over the course of production, with the clash marks under the chin becoming pronounced only after extended use. The 1936 Buffalo nickel was the last of the James Earle Fraser design that had been in continuous production since 1913, and doubled die varieties from this terminal year carry the added distinction of representing the series' final chapter of die preparation at the Philadelphia Mint.
