1935 Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

1935 WDDR-001 is a doubled die reverse on the 1935 Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Strong extra thickness covers both wheat ears and stems, both dots, and EPU (E PLURIBUS UNUM). Obverse Stage A has a gouge just under the B of LIBERTY on its left side, another gouge low inside the R of LIBERTY, a crack looping over the designer's initials, and a crack heading SE from the lapel into the vest. On Stage B the Stage A gouges are weaker, the lapel crack reaches into the bust, the crack over the initials now extends to the rim, and a light west-to-east crack crosses the hair above the ear. On the reverse, Stage A shows a gouge (dot) between the tops of the C and A in AMERICA. On Stage B a crack starts at the rim at 4:30 and heads NNW to the wheat grains, then turns to climb along them. Russ LeBeau submitted Stage A and John A. Wexler Stage B. CONECA lists it as 4-R-VI. Wexler notes that John Bordner took all the photos of this variety. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
