1929 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

Cataloged as the first doubled die obverse for the 1929 Lincoln Wheat Cent and designated Wexler Variety ID 1929 1¢ WDDO-001, this variety presents very minor doubling that manifests as an extra eyelid northeast of the normal eyelid on Lincoln's portrait. The doubling's concentration on such a fine facial detail makes this a variety best appreciated under magnification of ten power or greater. The specimen examined by the Wexler Team was a lower-grade coin, and no significant die markers were detected on either the obverse or reverse at that grade level. Higher-grade examples may yet reveal diagnostic die markers that would facilitate more confident attribution. Despite the subtlety of the doubling, extra eyelid varieties hold particular appeal among Lincoln cent specialists because the portrait's eye area draws natural attention. The 1929 Philadelphia issue saw substantial mintages during the final full year before the Great Depression contracted Mint output, and WDDO-001 specimens likely survive in moderate numbers among the large surviving population of this date.
