1928-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001
Error
Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1928-D 1¢ WDDR-001 and cross-referenced as CONECA 1-R-VI and Coppercoins 1928D-1DR-001, this Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent exhibits Class VI extra thickness doubling across the entire reverse design. The doubling is visible on all letters of E PLURIBUS UNUM, both dots flanking ONE CENT, both wheat ears, and the right wheat stem, creating a comprehensive spread that touches nearly every reverse element. Class VI doubling results from distortion during the hubbing process that produces extra thickness rather than a distinct secondary image, requiring careful examination to distinguish from normal die wear. No significant die markers have been detected on either side, though higher-grade specimens may reveal subtle features. The 1928-D Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck at the Denver Mint during Victor David Brenner's long-running Lincoln Cent design, in production since 1909. Minted during the prosperity of the late Roaring Twenties, the 1928-D saw moderate production before the Great Depression would drastically reduce mintages. The 95% copper, 5% tin and zinc composition was the standard bronze alloy for Lincoln Cents of this era.
