Description

Discovered by Henry Hennecken in April 1998 and cataloged as 4 II 1 - B2d with ratings of I-3 R-5, this 1927-S Peace Dollar documents an S/S Right — a repunched mintmark where the S was impressed into the die twice, with the second punch shifted to the right. The importance rating of I-3 ("Important") elevates this variety above the I-2 ("Average Interest") rating carried by most entries in this batch, reflecting greater collector significance for repunched mintmarks in the Peace Dollar series. The mintmark is classified as Micro Inverted S style, showing doubling with a notch at the top right of the upper serif, doubled left side of the lower serif, and slight doubling on the inside of the lower loop. Repunched mintmarks on Peace Dollars result from the hand-punching process where branch mint letters were individually impressed into working dies — any imprecision in positioning the punch between first and subsequent blows creates the doubled impressions documented here.
