1927-S VAM-1D

Description

Attributed to a January 2005 discovery by Bill Van Note, VAM-1D of the 1927-S Peace Dollar documents die file lines applied to the top and right of the obverse to remove die clash marks. Cataloged as 1D II 1 B2a with I-2 importance and R-5 rarity, the obverse displays die file lines at the top and to the right of Liberty's hair bun, concentrated where clash marks from the reverse design would have appeared. When obverse and reverse dies strike each other without a planchet, each die receives a transferred impression of the opposing design. Mint workers filed the affected area to remove these ghost impressions, leaving characteristic directional lines on subsequently struck coins. The concentration around the hair bun indicates the clash marks were most prominent there, where the reverse eagle would have transferred. The 1927-S Peace Dollar is a scarcer date with a low mintage, making varieties on this date appealing to collectors. San Francisco produced Peace Dollars from 1922 through 1935. Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper at 26.73 grams, this scarcer-date Peace Dollar preserves evidence of clash removal filing concentrated around Liberty's hair bun. =1927-S VAM-1D Die File Lines Top and Right Obverse= Discovered by Bill Van Note, January 2005.
