1927-S VAM-3

Description

Carrying the TOP 50 Peace Dollar VAM designation with intensity rating I-3 and rarity rating R-4, the 1927-S Peace Dollar VAM-3 was discovered by Jeff Oxman in February 1998. The reverse doubling is among the stronger examples in the 1927-S series: bottom edges of the upper olive leaves are reversed-doubled, and the rear edges of the leg feathers show similar hub displacement. A diagonal die gouge at the designer's initials on the reverse is shared with VAM-1J, indicating a common die origin or related working die; VAM-5 also exhibits reverse doubling but at a weaker intensity than VAM-3. The obverse die for VAM-3 was initially paired with a normal reverse as VAM-1J, with the doubled reverse die introduced in a later pairing for the early die state (EDS). As a TOP 50 Peace Dollar variety, VAM-3 occupies a premium position within the series, and R-4 rarity means it is scarce but not prohibitively rare. The 1927-S Peace Dollar is a 90% silver coin struck at the San Francisco Mint; Peace Dollars use the TRVST spelling in the motto as part of Adolph de Francisci's original design.
