1927-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-002

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1927-S 5-cent WRPM-002, this repunched mintmark variety on the 1927-S Buffalo Nickel displays S/S Northeast — the mintmark punched a second time with the repunch positioned to the northeast of the original impression. During this era, mintmarks were applied individually by hand to each working die using a small steel letter punch and mallet. If the engraver's first punch strike was mispositioned, a corrective second blow would leave traces of the initial impression visible beneath or beside the final placement. On James Earle Fraser's Buffalo Nickel reverse (1913-1938), the S mintmark sits below FIVE CENTS on the flat recessed field beneath the bison — the Type 2 configuration adopted mid-1913 for improved die longevity. No additional die markers were detected on either the obverse or the reverse beyond the repunching itself, and no cross-references to other cataloging systems are known. The northeast displacement means collectors should look for remnants of the first S position below and to the left of the final S, visible under 5x to 10x magnification.
