Description
Recognized as a Top 50 Peace Dollar VAM, this San Francisco Mint variety is one of the most sought-after die marriages in the Peace Dollar series. Discovered by Joseph Feld in June 1993, VAM-3 is classified under die marriage II 1 - B2c with a rarity rating of I-3 R-3. The obverse die II 1 is a normal die without significant distinguishing characteristics. The reverse B2c carries the variety's defining feature: strong doubling along the outside edge of the eagle's right wing from the shoulder down to the right talon, with additional doubling visible on the bottoms of the eagle's right leg feathers and the bottom edges of the top olive leaves. This doubled wing is readily attributable under moderate magnification and makes VAM-3 one of the more visually dramatic Peace Dollar varieties. The R-3 rarity means examples appear with reasonable frequency, supporting the Top 50 designation by ensuring collectors have a realistic chance of acquisition.
