Designated a Top 50 Peace Dollar VAM, the 1925-S VAM-2A is one of the most sought-after varieties in the Peace Dollar series, combining doubled olive branches on the reverse with an eroded obverse die that produces distinctive raised dots and splotches. Discovered in 2010 and cataloged by VAMWorld as 2A II1-B2b (Doubled Olive Branches, Eroded Obverse Die) with an I-3 interest and R-6 rarity rating, the obverse die designated II1 shows raised dots and splotches at the date and in both left and right fields — surface anomalies created by die wear and rust pitting that transferred as raised features to the struck coins. The eroded obverse die condition suggests this die remained in service well beyond its optimal life, allowing rust and pitting to develop on the die face between production runs or during periods of inactivity. The 1925-S Peace Dollar was struck at the San Francisco Mint with a mintage of approximately 1.6 million pieces, relatively modest for the series and contributing to the R-6 rarity level of this particular die pairing.
