1925 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001 / DDO-001

Description

The 1925-S WDDO-001, which VarietyVista numbers DDO-001, is a doubled die obverse on the Lincoln wheat cent with extremely strong Class VI extra thickness on the date, LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, heaviest on the date and WE TRUST. Both catalogs give it the Cherrypickers number FS-101; Wexler writes it FS-01-1925S-101 (013.3) and VarietyVista FS-101 (13.3). On the obverse Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties records a heavy die chip atop the D in V.D.B. On the reverse a small die gouge reaches SW from within the A of AMERICA, at the inside of its lower right leg, and two west-east die scratches show above the CA of AMERICA. Lou Coles submitted the coin. CONECA lists the die as 1-O-VI and Crawford as CDDO-001; Wexler gives its Coppercoins number as 1DO-001. VarietyVista, crediting James Wiles, describes extreme extra thickness on the date, especially the tail of the 9, and on LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST. Under marker codes UVC-1280 and DMR-010, both sides are early in stage A; stage B, a middle die state, is unconfirmed; and in stage C both sides are in a late die state.
