Description

Opening the cud record for the 1925 Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat cent, CU-1C-1925D-01R dates from the mid-1920s prosperity that preceded the Great Depression. The Roaring Twenties saw robust economic activity driving strong demand for circulating coinage, and Denver contributed significantly to the cent supply serving the nation's interior commerce. By 1925, Victor David Brenner's Lincoln design had been in production for sixteen years, and the Mint's die-making processes had settled into well-established routines — yet rim fractures remained an inherent risk regardless of operational maturity. Die steel under repeated impact stress develops micro-fractures that propagate unpredictably, and no amount of refinement eliminates the possibility of rim separation during a die's service life. The 01R designation establishes this variety as the first cataloged rim cud for the 1925-D date, the baseline against which subsequent discoveries are numbered. With at least four cuds documented for this date-and-mint, the 1925-D demonstrates that Denver's mid-decade production generated meaningful die stress, enough to produce multiple rim failures across its working die population.
