Carrying an S mintmark tilted far to the left, this 1924-S Peace Dollar VAM-5 is rated R-5 with 30 to 200 examples estimated and an I-2 interest level. The mintmark is a Micro 1 style S punched at an exaggerated leftward angle, distinguishing it from the more upright placements found on other 1924-S die marriages. Beyond the tilted mintmark, the obverse die exhibits polishing and file lines across the neck groove and chin, evidence of Mint workers attempting to extend die life by smoothing away clash marks or other surface irregularities. The digit 4 in the date shows similar file marks that create what collectors call a "flying 4" effect — the polishing lines give the numeral an appearance of motion or detachment. Additional scribble-like scratches appear near the right tiara ray, further documenting the die's maintenance history.
