Description

Cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #1 — the primary repunched mintmark for the 1924-S date — this Buffalo Nickel variety is cataloged as WRPM-002 by the Wexler Team. Two die stages document progressive deterioration: Stage A features a NNE/SSW die scratch on the Indian's hair at the opening between the two feathers, plus short die scratches northeast from the Adam's apple area on the obverse, with no visible reverse markers. Stage B retains Stage A obverse markers in weakened form while developing a filled mintmark at the inside upper S on the reverse — where die fill partially obscures the S interior. The filled mintmark in Stage B provides an immediately visible reverse characteristic for attribution. James Earle Fraser's Buffalo Nickel, featuring a composite Native American portrait and American bison, was in its twelfth year of production in 1924. San Francisco struck fewer Buffalo Nickels than Philadelphia in most years, making S-mint varieties proportionally scarcer. The CONECA RPM #1 designation confirms this as the principal repunched mintmark for the date, serving as the primary reference for the 1924-S RPM census.
