Discovered by David Close in 2014, the 1923-S Peace Dollar VAM-1AD5 is identified by distinctive die scratches appearing at the Y of LIBERTY and the 2 of the date on the obverse (die pair II1). The reverse employs die 2 (B2a) in its second state without the die clash spikes at the eagle's shoulder that characterized earlier pairings. Cataloged with an I-2 interest level and R-5 rarity rating, this variety requires careful examination under magnification to detect the subtle linear scratches that define it. Anthony de Francisci's radiant Liberty design on the Peace Dollar provides ample surface detail where such die imperfections can be spotted, and collectors working through the 1923-S date — struck at the San Francisco Mint — should examine the areas around the date and LIBERTY for these diagnostic features.
