Description

Discovered by Pete H in December 2010, the 1922-S VAM-2AA is a Scribbles Above WE, Die File Lines Obverse and Reverse variety on the San Francisco Mint Peace dollar. Classified as 2AA II 1 B2a (Scribbles Above WE, Die File Lines Obverse and Reverse) I-3 R-5, this variety carries an R-5 rarity rating indicating an estimated 31 to 75 surviving examples. The obverse, designated II 1, displays die file lines in the field in front of the forehead and below the R in PLURIBUS, with scribble lines running in various directions above WE. These scribble marks are characteristic of hasty die polishing where the abrasive tool was moved erratically across the die surface. The reverse, classified B2a, shows heavy die file lines at die clash marks, evidence that the dies struck each other without a planchet and Mint personnel subsequently attempted to polish away the resulting impressions. The I-3 interest rating and R-5 scarcity make this a challenging acquisition for Peace dollar specialists. San Francisco Peace dollars of 1922 are already less commonly encountered than their Philadelphia counterparts, and the documented die maintenance on both sides adds numismatic depth.
