Description
Discovered in 2010, the 1922-S VAM-1H1 carries die classification II1 with attribution code B1a under the title Triple Clash Spikes Eagle's Shoulder, rated I-2 R-6 with an estimated 13 to 30 known specimens. The reverse features triple clash spikes projecting upward from the eagle's shoulder, with the left spike well separated from the other two — a geometry indicating three distinct die clash events at slightly different alignments. Earlier die state examples show only two widely separated spikes, providing a die-state diagnostic for sequencing specimens from two-spike to three-spike condition. Die clash spikes form when dies strike without a planchet, transferring design elements; accumulated clashes without full polishing between events produce the stacked spike pattern. The 1922-S Peace Dollar was struck at San Francisco. The R-6 rarity rating and triple-clash provenance make VAM-1H1 a scarce and visually distinctive variety, with the progressive spike development offering a built-in die state study within a single catalog entry.
