Description

Discovered by C. Logan McKechnie in November 2004, VAM-1F on the 1922-S Peace Dollar is classified as II 1 B1a — designated "Double Clash Spikes Eagle's Shoulder #3" — with a rarity rating of I-2 R-6 (estimated 13-30 known). The reverse (B1a) displays weak, slightly doubled long vertical clash spikes rising from the eagle's right shoulder, accompanied by heavy die polishing lines around the shoulder area where Mint personnel attempted to remove the clash damage. The clash spikes on VAM-1F are positioned closer together and further to the right compared to those on the related variety VAM-1E, establishing the positional diagnostic that separates these two die states within the 1922-S VAM family. The double clash mechanism means this die experienced two separate clash events — instances where the obverse and reverse dies struck each other without a planchet — with the obverse design features leaving raised impressions near the eagle's shoulder, and the doubling of the spikes reflecting the slightly different alignment of the second clash relative to the first. The heavy polishing lines document the Mint's attempt to salvage the die by grinding down the clash marks, though the vertical spikes survived this treatment because they extended into recessed areas the polishing tools could not fully reach. The 1922-S Peace Dollar was struck at the San Francisco Mint in 90% silver, weighing 26.73 grams with a diameter of 38.1 mm, featuring Anthony de Francisci's Liberty and eagle design. The R-6 rarity rating indicates considerable scarcity, and collectors should examine the eagle's right shoulder under 5x to 7x magnification, looking for the vertical spike remnants amidst the polishing lines, positioned to the right of the corresponding features on VAM-1E.
