Description
Initially discovered in 2010 and revised in 2011, the 1922 San Francisco Mint Peace Dollar VAM-1E1 is classified as II1 (revised), B1a (Triple Clash Spikes Eagle's Shoulder), carrying rarity ratings of I-2 R-6. The reverse displays three clash spikes rising from the eagle's shoulder, with the leftmost spike well separated from the other two. Earlier die states show only two widely separated clash spikes, meaning the third spike developed as the die experienced additional clash events during its production run. The unpolished die surface preserves the full history of these successive clashes without the smoothing that die maintenance would introduce. Previously cataloged as VAM-1H1, this variety was reclassified during the 2011 revision. The Peace Dollar reverse reads TRVST, using the Latin V in place of U. The progression from two to three spikes across die states makes VAM-1E1 a useful study in how repeated die clashes accumulate visible evidence on Peace Dollar varieties.
