1920-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

Listed in the Cherrypickers' Guide as FS-502, this 1920-D Buffalo Nickel repunched mintmark shows a D/D South — the D mintmark was punched into the die, then punched again slightly south of the first impression, leaving remnants of the initial placement visible beneath the final position. Cataloged as UVC-049 and DMR-002, three die stages have been documented: Stage A in early die state on both reverse and obverse, Stage B in mid die state which remains unconfirmed, and Stage C in late die state also unconfirmed. The Cherrypickers' FS-502 designation marks this as a significant variety worthy of specialized collecting attention. Repunched mintmarks on Buffalo Nickels are popular among variety collectors because the mintmark was hand-punched into each working die individually during this era, making positional variations inevitable. The 1920-D was struck at the Denver Mint in the standard 75% copper and 25% nickel composition of James Earle Fraser's Buffalo Nickel design, which was produced from 1913 through 1938.
