Description

Die rim failures at San Francisco's 1919 cent production have been documented in extraordinary quantity, and this eleventh reverse cud adds to one of the series' most prolific cud populations. Post-WWI conditions at the facility produced an outsized number of fractures. When a rim section separates, planchet metal fills the cavity under striking pressure, creating the raised featureless mass that defines cuds. The 1919-S date yielded at least fifteen reverse cuds, making it a focal point for cud collectors. San Francisco struck approximately 139 million cents. Cross-referenced as CU-1C-1919S-11R, cataloged by Cuds on Coins.
