Description
San Francisco played a distinctive role in early twentieth-century cent production, serving as the westernmost of the three active mints striking Lincoln Wheat cents. CU-1C-1919S-10, the tenth cataloged rim cud for the 1919-S cent, emerges from a facility that balanced dual responsibilities: striking domestic coinage and producing coins for Philippine and other Pacific-region circulation. The San Francisco Mint's geographic isolation from Philadelphia, where all working dies were manufactured, meant die shipments traveled by rail across the continent — a logistical reality that influenced how aggressively branch mints used their dies before requesting replacements. The 1919-S cent's mintage of 139.76 million pieces demanded continuous press operation, and the ten-plus cuds cataloged for this date testify to the volume of dies that reached and exceeded their functional lifespan. Each rim cud represents the loss of part of a die's rim gutter, leaving a raised interruption in the design rim that tracks the rim's course. This tenth entry confirms a pattern of sustained die attrition across the year's production.
