Description
Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this 1919-S Lincoln Wheat Cent carries a rim cud on the reverse — a marginal die break where part of the die's rim gutter was lost, leaving a raised interruption in the design rim, following its curve, on the coin's tail side. The "R" suffix in the catalog designation confirms the break occurs on the reverse die rather than the obverse. San Francisco produced 139.8 million Lincoln Cents in 1919, a healthy mintage that nonetheless trails the Philadelphia output significantly, and S-mint Wheat Cents from this era are generally scarcer in collector grades than their P-mint counterparts. Rim cuds on early Lincoln Cents reflect the mechanical stresses inherent in high-speed coinage production, where dies operating under tremendous tonnage develop fatigue cracks along their edges that eventually propagate into full breaks. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins as CU-1c-1919S-06R.
