1918 Buffalo Nickel - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001 / DDR-001

Description

Cross-referenced as FS-801 in the Cherrypickers' Guide, the 1918 Buffalo nickel DDR-001, which Wexler numbers WDDR-001, is a doubled die reverse with a medium spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and a lighter one on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Wexler writes the cross-reference FS-05-1918-801 (016.45). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties calls it a Class II spread toward the center, seen on E PLURIBUS UNUM and only slightly on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The obverse has no markers noted; on the reverse a heavy die crack joins the tail to the rim. The coin was submitted by J. T. Stanton, CONECA lists the die as 1-R-II, and Wexler notes that Kevin Flynn took the photos. VarietyVista gives the reporter as unknown and credits its black-and-white photographs to J. T. Stanton, courtesy of Whitman Publishing. Under its marker codes UVC-037 and DMR-002, stage A (early) is unconfirmed. Stage B, a middle die state, shows a die crack from the lower tail to the rim at 3 o'clock, a light crack linking the first A of AMERICA with the rim, a double die clash through the L of PLURIBUS and another under the chin. A late stage C is unconfirmed.
