Bearing catalog number CU-1C-1917S-04R, this fourth documented rim cud on the 1917 San Francisco Wheat cent deepens the evidence that this date-and-mint experienced systematic die distress. Cuds vary considerably in size, from small marginal breaks barely intruding on the design to massive retained fragments covering significant portions of the coin's surface. Rim cuds on Wheat cents most commonly appear along the reverse periphery, where the raised ONE CENT lettering and wheat stalk tips create stress concentrators in the die steel, though obverse breaks near IN GOD WE TRUST and the date also occur. The "R" suffix in the Cuds on Coins numbering system specifically denotes a rim break, distinguishing it from interior die breaks that receive different suffixes.
