1917 Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001 / DDO-001

Description

1917 WDDO-001 is a doubled die obverse on the 1917 Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team and by VarietyVista as DDO-001. Both catalogs give it the Cherrypickers number FS-101 (013); Wexler writes it FS-01-1917-101. Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties describes a very strong counterclockwise Class I spread on the date, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, the vest and bowtie, and Lincoln's hair, eye, nose and lips. On the obverse a die scratch runs SW from the upper right of the crossbar of the T in LIBERTY to the middle of the T's upright; on the reverse a fairly strong die scratch runs SE from the second U of UNUM at its lower right. Stewart Blay submitted the coin. CONECA lists the die as 1-0-I, Breen as #2081 and Crawford as CDDO-001; its Coppercoins number is 1917P-1DO-001. VarietyVista, crediting Mary Louise Winters, describes a strong spread on the date, IN GOD WE TRUST, the coat, the tie, the lips, nose and eye, the LIB of LIBERTY and, lightly, the hair. Under marker codes UVC-1253 and DMR-003, stage A, an early die state, is unconfirmed; in stage B a die scratch lies between the tops of TY in LIBERTY, with both sides in a middle die state; stage C, a late die state, is unconfirmed.
