1915 Buffalo Nickel - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001 / DDO-001

Description

Designated FS-101 in the Cherrypickers' Guide, the 1915 Buffalo nickel DDO-001, which Wexler numbers WDDO-001, is a doubled die obverse with a strong spread on the eyelid, nostril, lips and chin of the portrait. Wexler writes the cross-reference FS-05-1915-101 (014.9). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties calls it a strong Class IV spread toward the northwest, visible on the eye, nose, lips and chin, with slight doubling on LIBERTY as well. It notes no die markers on either side. Jim and Mark Lafferty submitted the coin, and CONECA lists the die as 1-O-IV. VarietyVista gives the reporter as unknown and notes that its photographs, courtesy of Whitman Publishing, were taken by J. T. Stanton. It tracks the die under its marker codes UVC-020 and DMR-003 through an early stage A, a middle stage B and a late stage C, none of which it has yet confirmed.
