1915 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001
Error
Description
Designated FS-101 in the Fivaz-Stanton Cherry Pickers' Guide, the 1915 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001 is a significant early Buffalo Nickel variety displaying strong spread on the eyelid, nostril, lips, and chin of the Native American portrait. The FS-101 designation indicates inclusion in the most widely used die variety reference for U.S. coins. Attributed by VarietyVista with die classification UVC-020 and die marker reference DMR-003, three die stages have been tentatively identified: Stage A in early die state, Stage B in mid-die state, and Stage C in late die state, all currently unconfirmed. The 1915 Philadelphia Mint Buffalo Nickel was struck only two years after James Earle Fraser's iconic design entered production in 1913. Strong doubling on facial features — particularly the eyelid and lips — makes this variety visually dramatic under moderate magnification. The Buffalo Nickel series (1913-1938) has yielded relatively few significant doubled die obverses compared to later series, making DDO-001 one of the key varieties for Buffalo Nickel specialists. Attribution is credited in part to the research of J. T. Stanton.
