1913-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-001
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-012 and DMR-003, this 1913 San Francisco Buffalo nickel Type 2 shows an S/S repunched mintmark with the initial punch offset to the east, paired with the RDV-002 reverse design variant. Three die states are documented. Stage A in early die state remains unconfirmed. Stage B at mid die state shows a die clash through E PLURIBUS UNUM on the obverse, progressing to a strong die clash under the chin as the die reaches late condition. Stage C in late die state remains unconfirmed. The 1913 Type 2 Buffalo nickel redesigned the denomination from a raised mound to a recessed area below a flat ground, improving wear characteristics. San Francisco mintages for this first-year type were modest, and the hand-punched S mintmark on this early issue required careful positioning beneath the buffalo. The eastward displacement of the initial S creates a diagnostic secondary image best viewed under magnification. The progressive die clash through the motto provides a useful die state sequencing tool for collectors examining this variety.
