1913 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-004

Description

Type 2 Buffalo Nickel — the Bison on Flat Ground design introduced partway through 1913 when James Earle Fraser's original raised-ground design proved to wear too quickly in circulation — and this fourth cataloged doubled die reverse for the date shows medium spread on FIVE CENTS and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, decreasing in intensity from left to right. The directional spread pattern helps classify the doubling mechanism, as the left-to-right decrease indicates the hub displacement was greatest at one end of the inscription. Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-247 with die marker reference DMR-010, three die states document the die's working life. Stage B reveals die clash evidence: clash marks visible through the L of PLURIBUS and below the chin on the reverse, indicating the obverse and reverse dies struck each other without a planchet during production. The reverse die variety is RDV-002, corresponding to the Bison on Flat Ground design. Medium spread across major reverse inscriptions places this among the more readily visible DDRs for the 1913 Type 2, where the bold relief of Fraser's design makes doubled die features more detectable than on later, flatter coin types.
