1910 VDDR VDDR-001

Description

Documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-???? (unassigned) and DMR-0?? (pending), the 1910 Lincoln Wheat Cent VDDR-001 exhibits light spread on TE of UNITED, F of OF, TA of STATES, and M of AMERICA — a partial-inscription doubling pattern affecting selected letters distributed across the reverse legend. The scattered letter involvement suggests a hub displacement vector at an angle that produced visible doubling only on those letter elements whose geometry and orientation relative to the displacement direction generated sufficient separation to be detectable. Three die stages trace the working die's deterioration: Stage A remains unconfirmed at early die state; Stage B reveals extensive structural failure including die cracks from the lower right wheat grains to the rim, from the upper left wheat grains to the rim, running north from the rim at the K-6:00 position, and from the bust to the rim, along with a die clash at the throat — all classified as early mid-die-state (EMDS); Stage C is unconfirmed at late die state. The reverse carries additional significance as a transitional reverse, identified as RDV-004 (Deep cut N, no V.D.B.) and RDV-003 (Shallow cut N, no V.D.B.), representing a changeover between reverse die varieties during the 1910 production year. Victor David Brenner's designer initials V.D.B. had been removed from the reverse after the 1909 controversy, and these reverse die variants track subtle differences in the N punch depth across the transition. The 1910 cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 95% copper composition at 3.11 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. The combination of doubled die reverse characteristics with transitional reverse die variant status makes this a variety of particular interest to specialists studying the early Wheat Cent reverse die progression.
