Description

Third cataloged reverse cud for the 1910 Lincoln Wheat Cent, CU-1C-1910-03R represents a different die than the 02R entry, documenting a separate reverse rim failure from Philadelphia's 1910 cent production. Each cud variety originates from a distinct die, meaning the 1910 date produced at least three reverse dies that fractured at the rim during service — an indication of the mechanical stresses these dies endured over millions of impressions. The cud manifests as a raised, featureless area at the rim where a broken section of the die face fell away, leaving a void that filled with metal during each subsequent strike. The 1910 Lincoln cent was struck without a mintmark at Philadelphia in the standard bronze composition, during the series' sophomore year after its celebrated 1909 debut. Die failures from this early period draw particular interest because the Mint was still refining production parameters for Brenner's design — hub depth, striking pressure, and die hardness all influence how quickly a die develops fatal fractures. Documented by the Cuds on Coins project, this variety adds to the failure record for one of American numismatics' most collected series.
